Every year with the release of the new iPhone, Apple also unveils a major software update to their operating system called iOS. This fall, when Apple will release the iPhone 6, it will also launch iOS 8, which will bring some significant new features to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. If you own an iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, or 5S and don’t plan to buy the iPhone 6 right away, updating to iOS 8 is the best way to keep your current phone up to date. Photo courtesy apple.com To get you ready for the update, here is a primer of what to expect from iOS 8: Messages – With iOS 8, you can record and send voice messages right from the messages app. Users will also be able to record and send videos all from within the messages app. Continuity – Users with multiple Apple products – iPhone, iPad, Mac – will be able to move from one device to the next more seamlessly. On iOS 8, if your iPhone is ringing in another room, you will be able to answer the call on your iPad or Mac. Continuity also allows you to pick up where you left off with emails, calendar events, and more. Health – The Health app will be a collection of data taken from a selection of health related apps you use on a daily basis. For example, if you use an app to count calories, track workouts, or monitor sleep patterns, the health app will collect information from those apps and store it all in one organized place. This information provides users with a quick snapshot of their health and wellbeing. Enterprise – iOS 8 devices will have plenty of new features for the workplace. When creating a meeting or event in the calendar app, users will now be able to see if there is a scheduling conflict with anyone they’re inviting. In mail, users can set an out of office message right from their device, and designate emails to read later if they are too busy at the time. Whether you are planning to buy the iPhone 6 or just complete the software update on your current phone, iOS 8 will enhance the experience of using an iPhone. These four major changes, with the addition of a number of smaller adjustments and enhancements, should make iOS 8 Apple’s most advanced and exciting operating system yet. If you still have an iPhone 4 now it's the time to consider selling it and upgrading to a newer generation.
